Courses to be taught on Dec. 1st and 2nd 2008.
Law Enforcement Suicide: This course
details the recognition of the symptoms, departmental prevention, individual
prevention, and the intervention of LEO suicide.
This course is very intense and
participants should be selected based on:
a. Their reputation as a law enforcement
officer,
b. Their proven ability to keep secrets,
c. Their prior exposure to critical
incidents (may be duty or non-duty related),
d. Their ability to communicate; and,
e. Their genuine compassion for other
law enforcement officers.
Law Enforcement Stress: Issues unique to law enforcement
are the focus of this section. Reduction of political, social,
financial, departmental, and personal issues stress is discussed in detail.
Critical Incident Stress: This course focuses on the
physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, social, spiritual, and family
changes that occur during and after a critical incident.
Family Issues: With the law enforcement divorce rate
being twice the national average, this class becomes a high priority. Communication issues, law enforcement unique
issues, and reasons for the high divorce rate are all discussed.
Law Enforcement Shootings: A common specific critical incident, LEO shootings are rarely discussed. This course focuses on the aftermath of a shooting and how to minimize stress while maximizing department liability.
Recognition of Metal Disorders: This
class will instruct the peer support member to recognize the most
common disorders found in law enforcement officers and how to properly
refer the officers for treatment.
